Do not use
* if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, or difficult in urination due to an enlarged prostate gland unless directed by a doctor
* if you are taking prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), certain drugs for depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions or Parkinson's disease, or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug
* for persistent or chronic cough such as occurs with smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema or where cough is accompanied by excessive phlegm unless directed by a doctor

- you are taking tranquilizers or sedatives
- condition worsens
- if symptoms persist for more than 7 days or clear up and occur again within a few days
- cough persists for more than 1 week, tends to recur, or is accompanied by fever, rash or persistent headache, as these may be signs of a serious heart condition
- you are uncertain whether your prescription drug contains an MAOI
