Shake well prior to use.

Pour in a glass and have the patient drink 600 mL within 15 minutes. The first radio-graph (in pronation) should be taken 15 to 20 minutes after the patient started drinking followed by a radiograph every 20 minutes until terminal ileum is visualized radio-graphically.

Discard any unused portion.

Use diluted for either single or double contrast radiography of the colon. The volume and concentration of Polibar ACB to be administered will depend on the degree and extent of contrast required in the area(s) under examination and on the equipment and technique employed.

Instructions for Mixing:
Prior to mixing, choose the desired density (% w/v, % w/w) from the chart below, depending on procedure type. Remove and discard white seal. Add the required amount of lukewarm water to obtain the desired concentration. Close cap and hold bag by the finger holes and shake vigorously until powder is completely suspended (about 20 to 30 seconds). Wait 10 minutes, then re-shake for 30 seconds.
NOTE: When adding more than 800 mL of water, add the water in two equal portions, shaking vigorously each time.

NOTE:
Due to reported anaphylactoid reactions to latex, it is strongly suggest that vinyl or non-latex gloves be used during the procedure. All plastic/rubber accessories are disposable, single-use devices that must not be reused or left in the body cavity for an extended period of time. Fluoroscopy may be used to visualize rectum with contrast medium to ensure absence of contraindications. (See CONTRAINDICATIONS.) For double contrast studies, use an enema tip for air contrast (not included) and follow the stated instructions for use. Connect enema tip to tubing of enema bag. Lubricate enema tip with desired lubricant and carefully insert into the patient’s anus. Care must be taken during insertion of the enema tip not to exert undue pressure to the neuromuscular plexus, which can lead to vasovagal reactions and syncopal episodes. Forceful or deep insertion may also cause tearing or perforation of the rectum. Release the clamp on enema tubing and administer the desired quantity of the barium suspension. Discard entire enema kit with tip (these are intended for single use only.)

In order to achieve optimum results, the colon must be cleansed prior to the use of a barium enema. This is usually accomplished by placing the patient on a low fat, low residue diet, combined with the use of laxatives and/or cathartics. A cleansing enema may also be used unless contraindicated.

Instructions for Mixing:

Add 450 mL water into a mixing container. Pour contents of the pouch into the container. Replace the cap, invert the container to mix the powder with water and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Let mixture stand for 5 minutes. Reshake prior to use for 15 seconds.

Yield:

460 mL of a 2% w/w barium sulfate suspension.

Suggested 30 Minute Barium Administration Protocol for Abdomen Studies:

Administer 300 mL (10 fl oz) CT barium sulfate suspension 30 minutes before scan and 150 mL (5 fl oz) immediately prior to scan; or use as directed by physician.

Suggested 90 Minute Barium Administration Protocol for Abdomen / Pelvis Studies:

For Oral Administration: GI Tract Marking

The patient should begin drinking VoLumen® approximately 20 – 30 minutes prior to the scheduled procedure. It is recommended that the patient consume multiple bottles, about 900 mL to 1,350 mL total volume prior to the exam or use as directed by physician. For improved gastric marking have patient consume the final 200 mL immediately prior to scan. Bowel marking is consistent due to the uniformity of the 0.1% concentration of BaSO4. Bowel lumen marking can be improved by increasing the volume of VoLumen® consumed (see below). Other dosing regimens may be followed as applicable. In patients where marking is problematic, such as obesity and delayed transit, improved marking may be possible by increasing the total volume of VoLumen® administered up to 1,800 mL or four (4) bottles.
